Submission folders.

Wed Feb 3, 2016, 7:48 AM by Serendiipitii:iconserendiipitii:
There has been a HUGE influx of submissions being submitted to the incorrect folder lately. Since there has been a gaggle of new people joining us as well, please consider this a welcome and guide to how to submit your art into the folders properly. Remember, you only get one submission a day, so if you place it in the wrong folder, you have to wait until you can submit again!

Here are the folders that we currently use:

〚 Featured 〛
This folder has a moderate quality control; submissions must be fully cleaned, colored, and of OC content (no adoptables, non-OC deviations, advertisements, etc) to be considered.

〚 All Reference Sheets 〛
All reference sheets/profiles of original characters. This includes fan characters, OC fanart (art you have drawn for another person of their OC), and your OCs.

〚 Your OC - One Male 〛
One male original character that belongs to you.

〚 Your OC - One Female 〛
One female original character that belongs to you.

〚 Your OC - Animals, Anthros, Furries〛
All animal OCs, and anything beyond a Kemonomimi, such as furries, anthros, etc.

〚 Your OC - Other Species 〛
Other species not covered by the other folders.

〚 Your OC - Genderless / Other Gender 〛
OCs that do not have a gender, or are a gender other than male or female.

〚 Fan Characters 〛
OCs that you have based off of a fandom (ex. Naruto original character, Sword Art Online original character)

〚 OC x Canon 〛
All pieces that have OCs interacting with canon/official characters go here. There must be at least one OC present. (ex. Naruto battling an OC)

〚 Group Shots 〛
More than OC in a piece. This includes drawings of your own OC with another person's OC.

〚 OC Fanart 〛
Art of OCs that are not yours. This does not include pieces of real life people.

〚 All Chibis 〛
All submissions that depict a chibi, regardless if it is your OC, a reference sheet, etc.

〚 Your OC - Comic Pages & Covers 〛
For pages and cover art of original mangas and comics.

〚 Clean Sketches, Lineart, and Monochromatic 〛
For clean sketches, lineart, and monochromatic pieces.

〚 Mature Rating 〛
These must follow all DeviantArt rules and guidelines, as well as the guidelines mentioned in the folder description.

It is so important that you submit to the correct folder - if you have any doubts about where you are supposed to submit, please do not hesitate to send us a note with your deviation, and just ask! We don't bite much.

Also, we are implementing a new rule, effective today.

Any deviation you submit MUST state somewhere, either in the tags or in the Artist Comments, that your art contains an OC

We're getting too many people submitting what looks like random pieces of art, and it turns out that it's an actual OC. I'd say for every 3 submissions we receive, at least 2 are like that. Please remember to add this info to your submission, and we will be eternally grateful (:

If you have ANY questions at all, please do not hesitate to ask us! We're here to help :star:

Thank you for the rules reminder!
Very good idea with the new rule, as a moderator to a few groups I support your decision since we struggled with OCs art as well. :XD: I remember I was pretty shy about my OCs a few years back so I didn't write a word about them, but I somehow got used to the whole "OC culture" on DeviantArt and learned there's no need to keep them secret. I think it's fair to expect even just a line "this is my OC" or "OC (c) me" somewhere in the description since that's obviously the focus of the group. Thanks for running the group smoothly! :heart:

I agree, it feels weird getting into the OC scene, so to speak, but once you're in - oh lawd, are you ever in, haha.
Thank you so much for the kind words, we all appreciate it. <3

I have a question, is mild gore even accepted in this group? I've made a drawing that contains gore but it only contains blood on the finger and the eye. The sources of the wounds are hidden. Bleeding eye is almost covered with hair. I personally don't think that it needs mature content.  But when I send it to the group it got denied beccause there is gore and not mature content. It's not like the internal organs are visible and the guts are flying around... Please tell me if you don't accept drawings that contain gore so I don't submit those drawings to this group.

Thanks.

Mild gore is accepted, as long as you put it into the
correct folder, which would be the Mature
Where did you submit it to? Can you link the deviation?

I don't really remember.I know that I didn't submit to mature and I'm sorry about that. That was my fault. And then I got a message that said that I had to submit to the mature folder but because of the eye and mature content filter not being on it was not suitable to submit to this group.

That's probably why it was declined then, because it wasn't sent to
the correct folder. I don't know if the Mature filter is supposed to be on your deviation or not,
but if you submit it to the Mature folder, it should be fine.

awe man, that seriously sucks
but it is nice to have rules what things are

yea, tagging or stating something with an oc is nice ;o;

I honestly state everything whether it is my oc or someone else, but some mods were too quick to decline just because I added a com info for something and saying it's not my oc.
I worked out in the end, but I wasted a day just resubmitting it >:u

and please keep up with the good work

What if a submission fits into more than one folder? For example, would a My Little Pony OC go into the Animals folder or the Fan Characters folder? I'm assuming the Fan Characters folder, so the Animals folder stays completely original designs?
But what if it was a chibi? Would it go into the Chibi Folder, or the Fan Characters folder?

If it's a MLP chibi, send it to the Chibi folder, please.
If it's a MLP character that you created, it's Fan Characters.

My gosh, I know how that is. I was a contributor for another group for a short while, and it was inconvenient to have to check in the artist's gallery to see if the character in the submission was an OC or not. Because sometimes, it really isn't obvious, and I've seen too many people try to get away with putting some random one-time character in OC groups to get more attention (or something). I also saw the same people submitting things in the wrong folders and doing the same mistakes over and over again, so we had to constantly tell them what they were doing wrong. Most people either never bothered to change what they were doing, never read our comments, or both.

Keep up the good work, to everyone who keeps this group going. I like strict rules. They usually help so much.
And I'll keep trying to submit things into the right folder! :XD:

Oh geez, you actually went in and checked galleries
for their OCs? Kudos to you, I don't have enough time to do
that Dx And we've had a few submissions that were just random
pictures masquerading as OCs too, lol. It's really tiring some days ._.
I sincerely hope people will start reading at least this journal, and
see if that helps at all ...

We thank you muchly! I like strict rules too, actually. It keeps things
a lot tighter and easier to manage :meow:.
We appreciate it more than you think, aha! :la:

Yep...I realized that I didn't the have time [or patience] for that back then, so I had to step down from contributor status. u__u
Yeah, I'm beginning to think that people maybe read the rules once before they join, and then they get lost in all of the groups that they're in, so that they just don't care anymore, lol. :T It's unfortunate.

Yes, exactly! :happy:

It kind of feels that way sometimes, and I understand
the feeling when you're in so many groups, but having
even the basic memory that certain groups have certain
things would be a nice idea - of course, everyone is different,
but still. Nice to dream ^^;

Hahaha. You're a great co-founder, though! SOMEbody has to put their foot down, even if they get hate for it. It's difficult to do sometimes.
Also, I agree. At the very least, it can't be difficult to remember that a group is an OC group (especially when it SAYS OC as PART OF THEIR NAME), and it can't be too difficult to quickly scan the folder types and to have a general idea of what should go where.
Anyway, keep on doing the good work you do. :clap:

So I have to actively state that my things contain Ocs now?
That's kind of a pain, especially since I never received this journal. ^^;
  I can get that for fan characters, or pics containing non-ocs, since it can be hard to tell, but it's kind of just inconvenient for me. ^^;

Though this does explain the random comment asking if something was an OC, which made no sense at the time because I had no idea which item they were referring to. ^^;

Although now that I know it was this piece(griffonmender.deviantart.com/a…), I kind of question why they'd even need to ask, as there are NO tags mentioning preexisting series, and the links in the description lead to a CHARACTER REFERENCE, a sheet of small drawings used to plan out the main piece, and a link to a journal requesting CHARACTER CRITIQUES.
     The last of those three is even directly labeled as such.

Which you'd think would kinda make it pretty clear this wasn't a fanart, but I guess not. ^^;

Either way, I haven't received any replies from that comment, and I've now most likely lost my daily submission today as a result of a policy change I didn't know anything about, when all I wanted was to add my deviation to the "single female oc 2" folder. ^^;

Yes, it's fairly quick to do when submitting your art, and only takes
a moment.
I'm sorry if it's an inconvenience, but there are people who are just submitting
art here that aren't even OCs, which is the whole purpose of this group. Labeling
it helps us with the voting process, and saves having several comments go back and
forth the admin and submitter. I know that submission, since we were just talking about
it together a few minutes ago, and it was really hard to determine by just looking at the
first page if it was an OC or not. And as I mentioned to you in our conversation, admins do not
generally have time to go digging through links on a submission simply because there are
so many coming through. It would take forever, and we're already trying to stop things from
expiring. "Character Critiques" to me does not indicate anything but critiques, not necessarily
you're own characters, so no, it's not clear at all to us, sorry.

And I'm not sure what you mean by you haven't received any replies to that comment, we just
spoke a few minutes ago?

I totally agree here. Im only a member here but im a mod for a vveerryy large art group such as this one. It does get very discouraging to have a large group of art in the wrong category that you them have to sort through. Sometimes the folders are too full for other categories, and instead of telling the group, they just put it wherever, then they get mad when their piece is removed or declined. Man, this group seems a lot more organized than the one im in!

It can be, if your piece has more than one element to it, like
a lineart reference sheet. That could be in either the Clean Sketch folder,
or the Ref folder. Gets a bit tricky.

That could be confusing, but they have to see which element sticks out more. Like you said about lineart reference sheet its more of a ref. then a lineart.

So then I have a question for you:
If you are so deliberate in having everything specifically placed in a particular folder, why is it that you decline submissions that are sent to the correct folder?
Reply
:iconserendiipitii:
Serendiipitii Featured By Owner Feb 3, 2016  Student General Artist
Thanks for asking, because we get this a lot ~
We are now trying to be more deliberate because we have a lot more people becoming upset that they've wasted their submission for the day, hence why we're working on tightening the reins a bit. Although we have had some sort of guidelines before, it's been a lot more difficult to manage because admins are people too, and things happen outside of dA that hinder them from coming on here, which leaves the rest of us to try and fill in, and it doesn't always work - hence the overhaul currently happening. I was just saying to Cyanide-6v6 below, although we have guidelines to follow, all admins will vote for things differently, depending on how they view the art. For example, when someone puts in a full colored OC into the Featured folder, as long as it follows the general guidelines, it will be accepted. On the flip side (using Cyanide's example), if you have a black and white reference sheet you're using to submit to the Reference folder, one admin could say, "Yes, that belongs there because it's a ref", and one could say, "No, it's black and white so it goes to the Clean Sketches, Lineart, and Monochromatic". By getting a hold of how submissions are both put in AND how we accept/decline submissions, it will (eventually) run smoother, since nothing is an overnight experience.

I understand that, and thank you for explaining.

Almost 90% of the deviations I have submitted to your group have been declined. I was both concerned and curious because, as an individual who also runs groups and understands the difficulty, I try to submit my deviations to the correct folders. Again, they have almost always been declined which has been extremely frustrating - especially in the cases where there is no, or should be no ambiguity in understanding that the submission was sent to the correct folder.
